“ARE YOU A COMPOSER? LMF CHALLENGES YOU TO A DUO!”

LMF is thrilled to announce the launch of our competition for composers, or as we like to call it, a “Composers Challenge”. Because our motto has always been “Music with a Story”, rather than establishing yet another open-ended competition for composers – we wanted to break the mold a little by creating an annual challenge for composers with very defined parameters for their new work.
This year’s theme is “Year of Samba”. 2017 marks 100 years since the first samba was recorded to LP. Officially registered with the Almeida National Library in 1916 by the artist Ernesto dos Santos, best known as Donga, and then recorded in January, 1917, “Pelo Telefone” (Through the Telephone) represents the first true Samba recorded. Through its great popularity, the song would spark a nationwide (and eventual global) love for the style.
To commemorate this anniversary, we are challenging composers 35 and younger to submit newly written works paying tribute to the rich history of the beloved genre. In addition to the $1000 grand prize, the winning composition will also be premiered in the LMF 2017 Fall Season on October 26th at Nichols Concert Hall (Evanston, IL), featuring violinist David Lisker, and famed guitarist Ana Vidovic. The instrumentation is another defined limitation, hence this year’s tagline!
